Green drive in Dubai
to plant Ghaf trees posted on 05/10/2008
The environmental campaign Mission Green Earth will see distribution of seeds for 100,000 Ghaf trees for plantation by UAE residents.
The initiative, part of a global campaign, aims for one million UAE residents to stand up on October 17, 18 and 19 to remind their government of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of a sustainable environment.
Campaign spokesperson Rugmani Prabhakar said that as well as raising awareness, Mission Green Earth had an important practical component, involving tree planting and seed distribution.
"We aim to distribute 100,000 Ghaf seeds over the next year,” Prabhakar said. "But more than the number of trees, it's about sustainable planting. It's about planting the right type of species for this area.”
Between October 17 and 19, a number of tree planting activities will be coordinated by Dubai Municipality.
Mohammed Al Fardan, Head of the municipality's Promotion and Recreation Office, said the public parks and agriculture planned to designate a site in an agricultural project to plant local trees. "VIPs and a large number of school students will participate in planting these trees,” he said.
"The Department will also sow 5,000 seeds of Simbarouba, which grow in hot climate conditions and do not need large quantities of water.”
More than 1,000 UAE residents have registered on the campaign's web site, www.missiongreenearth.ae, to plant trees.
Prabhakar said the campaign would post information on the web site featuring trees indigenous to the Gulf, to encourage residents to plant them at home.
The campaign's organisers, Art of Living and the International Association for Human Values, were confident the initiative would gather momentum this week with residents returning from holidays.
Nearly 16,000 have registered on the web site to ‘stand up', but Prabhakar said there had been at least 50,000 verbal commitments over the past few days. "Big companies have committed as many as 10,000 people,” Prabhakar said.
The campaign will be held under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, with the support of UNDP, UNEP and the International Humanitarian City (IHC). Last year in the UAE, 98,000 people stood up to end extreme poverty and hunger. – Khaleej Times
